Hijole! |
I stopped by the little tienda down the street from my house to pick up a bag of chips for our chili dog BBQ tonight. Now, this little convenience store, similar to many just like it everywhere, is NOT the place you want to do your regular grocery shopping. The prices are far from reasonable, the selection is meager, and the freshness of most items is...dubious. Still, if you're out of toilet paper, craving a Snickers bar, or you need to stop on the way home for an emergency beer, this is your place.
While perusing one of the little aisles, I spied Micheladas Antojitos Drink Mix. Wha? It appeared to be a large Styrofoam cup with a salted/chile powdered rim. I shook it. There was something inside the shrink-wrapped cup. Whatever could it be? I assumed it was some kind of Chelada mix. The price was $2.25. I could buy a Chelada from the cold case for $1.99. Oh, what the hell! I'll try anything once!
No real instructions on the label. Once again, I assumed you're supposed to add a beer. I grabbed a can of craft lager...and a little can of Bloody Mary mix from the fridge. Inside the styro cup, I found a little spice packet. I opened the packet and tasted it. Salt, chile powder and citric acid, I believe.
I emptied the spice packet into the cup and added the beer and Bloody Mary mix. Man, I felt kind of guilty using a fine craft beer for this experiment, but I didn't have anything else.
I slowly approached the cup and took a sip. I lived!
Okay, There's nothing to this stuff that you couldn't whip up from a moderately stocked spice rack. I'm just sayin'. It didn't taste terrible but it sure was salty. If you have high blood pressure or you're on a low sodium diet, uh, you should probably avoid this stuff.
I also can't recommend drinking anything from a salt-rimmed styro cup. Just...no. Still, there's an iguana wearing a pair of board shorts on the label. I'm going to go ahead and give this product the coveted BeerGuyPDX Golden Turd Award. It's so bad, it's GOOD!
I don't think you were supposed to use the whole packet of mix with this drink. I'm pretty sure it was for a bunch of drinks.
ReplyDeleteConsidering there are absolutely NO directions on the cup, I can see why he mixed all of it in one cup, however, I think it's to keep re-seasoning the rim after you have finished your first cup. I don't feel like any of it should go in the actual drink. Then again, who knows. No directions. If I didn't know what a Micheladas was, I wouldn't even know to add tomato juice. Even then, what do I know. :)
DeleteCraft Beer is Way to strong for a Michelada. I don't think you mixed it the right way you should try it with a Modelo.
ReplyDeleteThey actually have the Modelo Chelada in cans at the same little store for less than 2 bucks. I think that's the way to go. No mixin', no fixin', just pop it and drink! ;-)
DeleteI'm a sucker for crazy little things so when I saw this in the little market by my house, I bought it for $1.99. I haven't tried it yet, You can do the same thing with mixing chili powder with salt and using your own cup, but like I said. I'm a sucker. I haven't even tried it yet and I'd say to save your money. My cup was plastic and not Styrofoam though.
ReplyDeleteThe packet is for the rim of your next drink, don't put it in the beer,, add Mary mix
ReplyDeleteI'm newly in love with these things - you aren't supposed to dump it all in there, and the dried pepper in the bottom lasts all weekend ... at night I toss it in the fridge - it's good for probably 12+ beers - you add the salt as needed ....
ReplyDeleteThese are especially great if you're at a cheap beer keg, or if you're prone to cheap domestic swill at home ...
I bought this at BevMo. There was a sign next to the cups that said to add two beers, and ice to the drink. I bought it over a year ago and just now tried it with two beers poured in. SOOOO damn salty. Holy crap.
ReplyDeleteI just checked BevMo's website, and these are the instructions, "Add your Favorite beer, ice and lime to this Michelada Drink Mix Cup and experience the spicy Michelada drink that is enjoyed throughout Mexico. The mix is good for two servings."
I'm adding a third beer "Becks" so I don't waste the first two. Nothing like drinking a bottle of salt! Lol.
