Could be a Derby winner... |
I found myself at Apex last night. It was a payday Friday, the sun was shining, and I had a pocket crammed full of wadded up beer money. Ah, life is good.
I met up with a table of friends and and settled down for a few tasty brewskis. By the way, if you find yourself at Apex and you want some tasty food to go along with said tasty brewskis, I highly recommend Double Dragon, which is directly across the street. They make some asskickin' Bahn Mi. Get the pork belly and froi gras. I'm serious, your stomach will thank you.
My second beer of the evening was Fort George Brewing's Kentucky Coffee Girl Imperial Stout. The taplist told me it comes with an ABV of 9.5%. It was five bucks for the 12 oz. snifter.
The beer was presented to me a deep, dark, black color with a small mocha head that quickly disappeared when I stepped away from the bar and dropped off a slight level change in the concrete floor. (I highly recommend watching that little step when you're at Apex.) Gratefully, I didn't lose the beer, just a little slosh off the top. In any case, minimal lacing was left behind.
Aroma was strong coffee and bourbon. Dark roasted malt and... more coffee.
Taste absolutely followed the nose. Big flavors of roasted espresso beans and Kentucky bourbon. They certainly gave this beer an appropriate moniker. A nice roasted malt aftertaste.
Full mouthfeel, with considerable body to it. Low carbonation. The finish is creamy and I really couldn't detect much of an alcohol bite to this brew. Excellent stuff. There's a nice pungency and character to Kentucky Coffee Girl, without it being a tonsil-coater.
I'm giving this one a BeerGuyPDX rating of 3 1/2 crushed cans out of 4.
