|The perfect TV watching red?|
What could be better than watching the world premiere of Sharknado 2: The Second One while drinking a fine craft beer? Nothing! Well, for a dud of a Wednesday night, anyway. Not familiar with Sharknado? What rock have you been living under? You see, a freak storm creates a giant tornado that sucks thousands of sharks out of the ocean and subsequently rains them down upon an unsuspecting populace. Highly improbable mayhem ensues. And with top acting talent like Tara Reid, Vivica A. Fox, Judah Freidlander, Kelly Osbourne and Andy Dick, how could it be anything other than AWESOME?
Okay, it's horrible, but in a train wreck-ish kind of way, it's impossible not to watch. Right now, I'm watching the severed head of the Statue of Liberty careening down the street toward a garbage truck. Thank gawd, I have my tasty craft beer at the ready! This is some (not) scary stuff!
The beer I'm drinking is Lagunitas Brewing Company's Imperial Red Ale. I bought the bomber for $4.35 at the little tienda down the street. It comes with an ABV of 7.8%.
The beer poured into my glass a dark red/amber, copper color with a clumpy, creamy, off-white head. The head rose up to a full finger thick and dissipated slowly. Copious amounts of thick, webby lacing left behind. What a beautiful brew!
Aroma was sweet, earthy malt up front with pine and citrus backing it up. Floral, herbal notes in the mix.
Taste was malty, hoppy, spicy, herbal, all things promised by the aroma. Mild, indistinct citrus and pine. Tinge of dankness. More fruity as it warmed up. Lots of flavor.
Medium to slightly sticky mouthfeel. Good carbonation. Just a hint of alcohol. Mildly bitter and earthy on the finish.
Overall, this is a darn near perfect red ale. Delicious and sufficiently complex. Great malt and hops balance. I'm giving Lagunitas Imperial Red Ale a BeerGuyPDX rating of 3 1/2 crushed cans out of 4.
